Time to make it a universal protocol at sketchy reef breaks? A local photographer explains.

The local government unit of General Luna, Siargao Island, in coordination with the Siargao Island Surfing Association (SISA), is set to implement mandates to regulate where surfing lessons can be conducted based on skill levels. The initiative designates specific surf spots that are permitted for certain skill levels to ensure that beginners, intermediate, and advanced surfers are taught in appropriate and safe locations. The new guidelines also include requirements for instructor certifications and adherence to safety protocols. These efforts are part of a broader move to preserve the quality of the surf experience, manage crowding, and maintain the safety of both tourists and local surfers. The policy is expected to support sustainable tourism while upholding Siargao's reputation as a famous surfing destination.
